In an effort to combat food inequity across Buffalo, Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) is seeking community partners to host their Growing Green Mobile Market for the 2016-2017 growing season. MAP invites all interested local not-for-profits and businesses to apply. Applications are due February 29, 2016.
The purpose of the Mobile Market is to serve areas of Buffalo where access to healthy, affordable, and fresh food is limited. The Mobile Market provides produce to neighborhoods that lack adequate access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The Mobile Market truck is easily identified by the brightly colored veggies donning blue jeans that adorn its sides. The Market is open to the public at partner sites for two to three hours at a time, from June until November, rain or shine.
Recipes, tips, and nutrition information are all part of the Mobile Market program. Prices are affordable and naturally grown or organic produce is sourced whenever possible. Common staples found on the Mobile Market truck include salad mix, cooking greens, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and squash. Many of these items are grown on MAP’s urban farm. The Mobile Market accepts cash, credit, SNAP, and WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program checks.
MAP has partnered with organizations and businesses such as Harmac Medical Products, Gerard Place, The Salvation Army, FLARE, Elim Christian Fellowship, and Moot Community Center. All interested organizations are encouraged to apply.
In 2015, the Mobile Market served over 4,000 consumers and distributed 30,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to individuals and families.
Also last year, MAP participated in the Double Up Food Bucks program for the first time. Double Up provides a $1 for $1 match, up to $20 per day, for SNAP recipients purchasing locally grown produce at participating Farmers’ Markets in WNY. Mobile Market sites comprised six of the 15 participating markets in 2015.
